Fattoria Calappiano, in Vinci, the territory of Montalbano represents a historical and architectural treasure of the De’Medici family of Florence. Built around 1500, it was commissioned by the Grand Duke Francesco I De’Medici and was one of the first examples of a Tuscan Farmhouse featuring wine-growing operations. The Farmhouse was later passed on to A. H. Savage Landor, grandchild of Walter Savage Landor, Shakespeare’s biographer. Inside the farmhouse, there are still paintings of distant civilizations, antique finds and memorabilia of his many travels in the East. Today the farm is owned by the Sensi family. Among the wines produced at Calappiano, the Vinciano wines represent the top of the Montalbano’s production. Variations of Sangiovese wine that speak of the hilly terrains of the area with their arenaceous and calcareous-marly layers and with sandy shales full of marine fossils and cobblestones. The Vinciano wine, which takes its name from the nearby village of Vinci, fresh and easy to drink; its Riserva version, originating from longer aging.
TASTING NOTES
The aromatic bouquet of wine is persistent and intense, quite subtle, has notes of ripe plums and nuances of various spices. The wine has a mature, full-bodied and balanced taste with resistant tannins and lively acidity, juicy notes of ripe strawberries and cherries, complemented by nuances of vanilla.
