Description

Uvavins is a large cooperative in the Vaud region created in 1929 by some of La Côte’s winegrowers. Their Vineyards are on the northern shores of Lake Geneva. Grapes come from various parcels located in the La Côte AOC.

This wine is a blend of Gamaret and Garanoir both sibling crosses of Gamay Noir x Reichensteiner. Both new varieties were launched in 1990 as varietals that are early ripening with good resistance to rot. Gamaret is widely planted in Switzerland with 430 ha under vine. It has expressive aromas which combine spicy notes (think pepper) with ripe black fruits and red cherries which combine with firm tannins and velvety juice. It’s a success story of the Agroscope scientists who created it as it’s now Switzerland’s 4th biggest red grape variety! Garanoir is a sibling of Gamaret, sharing the same parents. It’s less spicy but more structured so is often blended as in this example.

TASTING NOTES
Dry, smooth with very soft tannins and lovely texture in the body.

FOOD PAIRING
Perfect with spicy food – can even handle the heat of a spicy curry, especially tomato-based ones like Rogan Josh as well as other foods that you may pair with Gamay such as medium-soft cheeses.
