Why we love it
The most muscular of the Luminous Hills expressions of Pinot Noir – but with lots of finesse too.
Tasting notes
Ruby red in colour. On the nose, a complex bouquet with aromas of dark berry fruit, pomegranate, incense and five-spice powder. On the nose, black cherry and blueberry flavours blend with red fruit and spice, with hints of smoke and minerality.
Food pairing
Perfect with porcini mushroom pasta or butternut squash risotto, or lighter red meats such as duck.
Additional information
Luminous Hills Vineyard, located in the south-west of the Yamhill-Carlton District American Viticultural Area, is a high-elevation site with the typical sedimentary soils of the area, as well as a significant area of Jory volcanic soil. These two diverse soil types, along with a variety of carefully selected clones of Pinot Noir, result in three distinct expressions of Pinot Noir, one of which is the Lux.
Drawn from a mere three barrels, the 2019 is a classic Lux blend emphasizing the Pommard clone on sedimentary soil at the base of the vineyard for structure, power and dark fruit, balanced with the highly complementary 777 clone from the upper-elevation Jory volcanic soils, delivering companion higher tones of concentrated red fruit and minerality. Always a blend with longevity, the slightly cooler nature of the vintage should carry this one even longer.
