Mountford Estate was established in 1991 by Buffy and Michael Eaton who chose the site for its elevation and active limestone soils. The vineyard is set in a park-like environment on the North West face of the Waipara Valley’s eastern hills below the Teviotdale range. Dubbed the golden mile, as the aspect gains high amounts of light and heat. The soils, which are marl (active limestone), add a fine minerality to the finished wines. Initially planted in 1991, and added to in 2000, 2008 and 2013, the total plantings now sit at 9.3 hectares of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. The Hommage Single vineyard is grown on the steepest north-west facing slopes on the
Estate, which take the full brunt of the wind, sun and heat. The four noble varieties of Alsace; Gewurtztraminer, Muscat, Pinot Gris and Riesling are planted side-by-side. Hand-picked in a single day: Vin de Terrior is the style.

The 2014 Hommage has a crisp clean nose with aromas of kerosine and citrus from the Riesling with underlying notes of Christmas lillies, pear and stone fruits from the Muscat and Pinot Gris. On the palate, the wine has honeycomb, citrus and an array of fresh herbs finished with a clean balanced acidity. While there is a perceived sweetness to this wine it is fermented dry.
